Buffalo Construction is perhaps a diamond in the ruff in their industry. With a tagline of “Building Better”, they acknowledge that it means a lot more than “sticks and bricks”, as their President says. “We acknowledge we are not in the construction business. We understand we are in the relationships business. Our approach is to build better relationships, better ways of communicating, and better ways to manage our projects.”

After 25 years of business, their path to building better continues to grow – project to project, employee to employee. It only takes a few minutes to realize that the priority Buffalo Construction places on their clients is rivaled only by the priority they place on their employees.

Historically, Buffalo Construction used a simple scorecard and hadn’t engaged much in performance discussions. In an effort to elevate their overall approach, they employed uMap™ to keep the process simple and effective when addressing the following initiatives:

  • Improving retention
  • Increasing engagement for a better employee experience
  • Improving their performance process with coaching
  • Maintaining connection between their now remote and/or distributed workforce.

Engagement with uMap™

Buffalo Construction began their uMap™ journey with the engagement piece of uMap™, which helped them lay a foundation of connection and trust.

While Chris Dickerson, Learning & Development Manager, and his organization are early in the adoption of uMap™, they’re already finding it to be an easy process. Because one of their goals were to improve connection across their distributed workforce, Chris says uMap™ is “a really great tool” for connecting people anywhere.

As for their overall goal of improving relationships? Performance with uMap™

Chris and his team have also committed to a more regular performance management process by implementing Thrive365™, the coaching feature of uMap™. While just getting started in their cadence, Chris said uMap™ is already becoming “the perfect way to initiate a coaching conversation”, especially with employees who are participating in a flexible work environment.  

Buffalo Construction also prioritized the uManage™ training series in their rollout to help managers put the “why” behind the platform into everyday practice – from building connection, resolving conflict, to becoming a coach.

Like most organizations, Buffalo Construction wanted to customize the platform. Chris worked with our Customer Success team to integrate their own unique Individual Development Plan into the performance function of the uMap™ platform.

When asked how likely he was to recommend uMap™ to others based on his experience, he simply gave it a 10 out of 10.
